To Bruce Marchiano, whose portrayal of Jesus
in “The Visual Bible” inspired this poem
When I see the hungry or thirsty;
When I see a homeless one;
One who is sick, needy, or in prison
What, I ask, is to be done?
Am I going to meet the need I see?
Will I give my food or coat?
Or will I take care of number one?
Will I be a sheep or goat?
Do I care about the least of these;
The one I cannot stand?
Will I spurn those I do not favor,
Or will I reach out my hand?
I would not turn my back on Jesus;
I’d do anything, I hope.
But the Lowly One is “the least of these”
Will I be a sheep or goat?
Which will be the choice of my heart;
To the left or to the right?
Will I go to eternal punishment
Or everlasting light?
One day I’ll face the fruits of my deeds
And none can cheat or gloat.
Did I meet the needs around me?
Was I a sheep or a Goat?
